Hello:
Planet Sailor was conceived in mid-september 2023 as a "garage rock space opera" and "return to form" after fuguers cove's 18-month absence due to medical (and other) distractions.
most of the lyrics and music were written on november 4, 2023.
the first demos were recorded on november 4 & 5, 2003, starting with dirkle away (goodbye hemisphere) and star monkey.
i have a very small fanbase, and i make no money on fuguers cove, so rather than save the album release until the thing is finished and ready, i am going to humor myself by releasing demos as I record them, thus pulling the curtain on the construction of this album, and revealing my process in real time.
I have recently done the same thing for my writing process by releasing a 10 episode podcast called "Writing Rat Face" under the auspices of the Point Blank Podcast (
www.pointblankpodcast.com/e75-writing-rat-face-a-point-blank-limited-series-episode-1/). I enjoyed the experience and so I will do it again, but this time with rock and roll.
If I had a large fan base, this might spoil the album for them, but I don't, so I can do this without risk.
I might release five demos, or I might release three dozen demos.
But ultimately, I will release the album when it is finished.
If you decide to purchase the album, you will receive all the demos, plus the final album once it is finished and mixed and mastered. This might be in 2024, or it might next week.. We'll see.
###
here is the plan. we'll see what happens.
Planet Sailor EP
dirkle away
star monkey
blue moons
dog star
life on a comet
geometry suite (triangles / squares / circles)
tangerine dust
bitter pill
before departure
grungy, superdistorted guitars, muffled heavy & catchy AF
interlaced with bowie-esque acoustic sections (clear nod noted)
john frederick dirkle goes to space on a workman's mission and
is so transfixed and tranformed by cosmic wonder,
that he changes his mind about the purpose of life and love,
but he can't share what he knows with the world
because the comm links are down and he is all alone
adrift, he will either live forever or die knowing
that what he knows will never be known by anyone else,
and this is tragically sad to him, but he recognizes at last
that the irony of mortality is a bitter pill,
and the last lesson we must learn before departure
###
dirkle away (goodbye hemisphere)
hit the road and don't look back
stars and lights beyond the skies
see the life i left behind
see my life brought down to size
going away
going away
going away
from here
sonic stars and cosmic lights
leave the life i fucked up right
seek the black to vacuum wrongs
parables and evening songs
going away
going away
going away
from here (goodbye hemisphere)
###
star monkey
floating around
in this sucked out air
filling out forms
and dodging the faxes
they tell me
that something
is wrong
but i'm a star monkey
my response is bananas
i feel like i'm
in a getaway car
flying fast to the edge
for not paying my taxes
they tell me
that something
is wrong
but i'm a star monkey
my response is bananas
###
blue moons
blue moons
fizzle at the edge
of my vision
i can't remember
if it's fusion
or fission
that makes the ship go
that makes my mind slow
green stars
twinkle out the port
as i snort
what is left of these leaves
that they gave me
to relieve
this shaky feeling
in my heart
the feeling that things
are falling apart
just look out the port and see
blue moons
blue moons
blue moons
blue moons
###
triangle pose
shape up taking shape
stretching to exacerbate
the spinal cords accordian
the flabbergast custodian
the rip-right rout atone-ium
where is our plutonium?
###
dog star
been under a blanket for weeks
or is it days?
this time travel stuff
has my brain out of phase
i am out of phase with you
i am out of phase with you
been thinking of the dog star
in the summer sky
when i was young
i'd get so high
and talk of leaving
###
square planet
straight edge
line break
break back
wall crack
crack top
stick shed
shed skin
stone clack
back pay
pay check
check off
split check
split wood
heart attack
hard line
move ment
move fast
mountain man
moon mouse
mouse man
marshmallow
martian
chap, this
ray gun?
planet x
planet sun
square planet
give one
give two
give none
###
life on a comet
a solitaire life
on a plume of light
with a hot white core
i sat in his hut
and we drank from a cup
and he gave me a story
about what the world was
in the yesterlight
a good green place
that was wild and right
and then the earth was aflame
and the air was ablight
all the fire-filled lungs
all the cities alight
as we learned how to lie
as we learned how to run
as we learned how to fuck
up and stare at the sun
as we fell toward the light
and forgot to fall under
as we killed all we love
as we killed all we love
as we killed all we love
as we killed all we love
and the story was done
and the cup was dry
i stood in his hut
on a plume of light
with a hot white core
and i thanked him and
i wondered why
we couldn't learn the lessons
###
circles
circles & circles
and my heart soars
where the sun sets
the blue star gases
caught in the vents
seeming to fixate
on fixing the mess
sticky heart sours
with sun ascendant
circles & circles
circles & circles
circles & circles
that we circumvent
###
bitter pill
i am alone
in this hole
in a box
in the middle
of nowhere
it is a bitter pill
to take in the hole
to remember the ones
who told me so
i am a mole
in this cave
a quasar baby
at a sonic rave
i cut at my skin
after after shave
is this what they said about leaving
is this what they said
i can't remember what i recall cuz
of the voices in my head
###
before departure
take a deep breath
before the final test
the final test '
is a fluke
you'd be better off dead
than with a score in the 10s
they said
don't forget to relax your head
before departure
don't forget to mellow your mind
at the rupture
the sonic boom is nothing
when you see the earth behind
you, and you hurtle back to black,
spinning in your sack, the glow
about you
materializing
without atmosphere
all these atom eyes
all these starlight eyes
all these winking lies
mysterious
and delirious
before departure
